Sure, whatever you say. This is an ongoing battle between me and my boss.

I work in website management. I was hired by this company on salary to update, publish, and generally keep content flowing on their site.

I show up at 9am, and I can usually get my day to day work done fairly quickly, and I'm usually out the door around 4:30. I don't normally take a lunch break because I'd rather just get done and go home. my

My boss pulled me aside and told me "We expect you to stay for the full 8 hours each day. That's what we we paying you for." She then went on to acknowledge that I don't take lunch and that my productivity is fine. She then said "with your ADD, I don't know if you're even capable of doing 40 hours of work each week."

So, I used to come in, work from 9-4:30 without stopping, aside from bathroom breaks and coffee top ups. They were getting 7.5 hours of work out of me. Now, since I'm required to be here for my full 8 hours, I come in at 9 and leave at 5; I take the entire hour of my lunch off and if bothered simply reply "I'm on lunch right now.

Come back at 1." That means I'm only working for 7 hours each day. Congratulations Karen (not her real name), you just talked yourself out of an extra half hour a day of work from me - that's 2.5 hours of productivity a week you just screwed yourself out of.

[deleted] People don't quit jobs, they quit managers. You'll be quitting this one in the near future.

SilentIntrusion OP I use my new found hour at lunch to apply for other jobs now.

NomadofExile Working through lunch if just the BEST. There's nothing sweeter when I'm on contract and inevitably someone up the chain gets upset that I'm walking out the door at 4 if I don't have a meeting. I'm on site at 7:45 and usually done everything my projects need daily by 1.

Once the complaint comes in I break out my contract, point at the wording, and promptly switch back to my 37.5 hours. Guess I'm walking in at 8, out at 4, and will be taking my full hour daily for lunch now.

SilentIntrusion OP. So what's the difference if I work 9-5 with a one hour lunch break vs working 9-4 and taking my hour at the end of the day? I don't see where the issue is, but apparently there is one.

randumbh3r0 The ongoing battle between "we hired you to be here for this many hours" vs "we hired you to complete these tasks". If your productivity is good and you're working through breaks, they're really focusing on the wrong one of the above statements.

DonaldTrurnp "with your ADD, I don't know if you're even capable of doing 40 hours of work each week." In the US, that's a per se violation of the ADA, containing all of the elements right there in one sentence.

Adverse action (being pulled aside and counseled) based on being regarded as having a disability (explicit), of someone who is able to perform their job duties (since OP is on salary, working for 40 hours a week is not one of their job duties, at all).

TheRealSilverBlade If companies pay you for the day and not for the task, then you make sure that your tasks end up taking the whole day.

or-chid I would talk to HR. The manager throwing your ADD in your face is and insulting. Plus, it is considered a disability I believe. SilentIntrusion OP She is HR.

or-chid What the fudge. That is so messed up. I'm glad you're job hunting. That's completely unacceptable

Donaldisinthehouse. The problem with managers is most of them are just baby sitters. They have no real skills. I read an article that said a 25 work week was more productive than a 40 hour one. Thats what we need

SilentIntrusion OP I read this too. I'm debating a subtle propaganda campaign in the office consisting of news and research articles about work hours.
